GenePool

Software to convert genealogy GED files to Microsoft Access® and PHP
version 4.1, January 17, 2008

Genepool has been written by fellow genealogy hobbyists, Jeff Paar (United States of America) and Paul Dann (United Kingdom), who wanted to develop a software solution which would enable a way to represent genealogical data in a relational data structure and to provide a quick and customized way of publishing of genealogy data to the Internet.

Most genealogical database applications sold today use a standard file format, GEDCOM, in order to transfer data between different genealogical software applications. Genepool can read the GEDCOM (up to standard release 5.5) format and transfer the genealogical data to a relational database

Genepool can perform the following functions:

  • reads your genealogy GEDCOM file to a Microsoft Access database
  • reads your GEDCOM file into CSV files (comma-delimited)
  • creates a web-enabled GED-to-Web project that uses PHP and a text database. This can quickly get your genealogy data to your website in short order.

The PHP web project created by Genepool is compatible with Microsoft® Windows®, Unix and Linux web servers. As long as PHP is installed on your webserver, the PHP web project output from Genepool will run on it.

FAQs
What does it do?

GenePool reads a standard GEDCOM file, and produces a series of CSV files and a Microsoft Access 2000® database full of data. This is reinterpreted so as to provide the PHP files intended to display genealogy data on a website."

What platforms are supported?
GenePool is a Microsoft® Windows® application built using Visual Basic 6®. The GenePool application will run on Windows ME, 2000, XP. GenePool output (PHP files) will run on any webserver which supports PHP (Linux, Unix, Windows). Check with your domain host to determine if PHP is installed on their webserver.

Do I need Microsoft Access 2000?
No. Just upload the files GenePool produces to your webserver and you'll see your data presented through the PHP files. If you do have Microsoft Access 2000, you will be able to view the data within the database. You can also produce CSV files which can be imported into any relational database.

On which webserver platforms does it work?

What genealogy data programs can it work with?

Top

Does GenePool have any limitations?
Due to the fact that the PHP files use text files as a database, and that reading text files as a database on a webserver is very resource intensive, GenePool will not produce a PHP project with a GED file with over 4000 individuals.
